A Word That Builds Up
Paul tells the Corinthians to pursue love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially prophecy — because the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding, encouragement, and consolation. That's the heart behind the gift of prophecy: the Spirit supernaturally speaking to you or through you, to strengthen someone right where they are. Paul actually wishes everyone would prophesy, because a timely word from God does something no generic encouragement can — it tells someone God sees them. Growing in this gift takes confidence, not perfection. You don't need to have it all figured out before you're willing to share what you sense the Spirit saying, you just need to be willing to offer it in love and let God use it.
Growing Together in Transformation
“Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.” Growth was never meant to be a solo project. Just as athletes train better with partners who push them, your faith flourishes in community. The early church experienced “a deep sense of awe” because they were being transformed together. They didn’t just attend services; they did life together. When you isolate yourself spiritually, you miss the sharpening, encouraging, and challenging that comes from walking alongside other believers. God designed community to be the greenhouse where your faith grows. You need people who will celebrate your victories, challenge your blind spots, and remind you of God’s truth when you forget. Today, ask yourself: Who is speaking into my spiritual life? Who am I encouraging toward Jesus? Don’t settle for surface-level connection when God offers transformative community.
