A Word That Builds Up

A Word That Builds Up

Take 2-3 minutes to quiet yourself and ask God to speak to you today through your devotional time.

Reading: 1 Corinthians 14:1-5

Be sure to highlight or note anything that stands out to you while you read.
After reading the passage, take the next 5-10 minutes and spend time reflecting on what you read. You can write these things down in a journal or record them in your phone. Be attentive to both what you highlighted in the passage and what is going on in your life.

Paul tells the Corinthians to pursue love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially prophecy — because the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding, encouragement, and consolation. That's the heart behind the gift of prophecy: the Spirit supernaturally speaking to you or through you, to strengthen someone right where they are. Paul actually wishes everyone would prophesy, because a timely word from God does something no generic encouragement can — it tells someone God sees them.

Growing in this gift takes confidence, not perfection. You don't need to have it all figured out before you're willing to share what you sense the Spirit saying, you just need to be willing to offer it in love and let God use it.

Has the Spirit ever put a specific word, image, or sense on your heart for someone else — and what kept you from sharing it, or what happened when you did?

Now, take 10 minutes to seek God in prayer…

  1. Begin your time in prayer by taking 1-3 minutes to sit in silence (You can take longer if you sense the Spirit already beginning to speak to you).
  2. Pray through the things you sensed God speaking to you through the Scriptures or pray the following prayer: Lord, I want to grow in confidence to hear from You and share it in love. Give me a word today that could encourage, build up, or comfort someone in Your name. Help me not shrink back out of fear. Amen.
  3. Close by taking 5 minutes to sit in silence, asking God if there is anything else He wants to speak to you today.

Faith Step:
Ask the Holy Spirit if there's a specific word of encouragement He wants you to share with someone today, and if one comes, share it.
