Not Every Door Is Our Door

September 10th, 2026

Paul discovered that an open door did not automatically mean it was the door God wanted him to walk through. Although an opportunity for ministry was available in Troas, Paul recognized that something was not right within him and chose to move on. This reminds us that opportunities and circumstances must be discerned rather than automatically interpreted as God's direction. Not every open door is our door, and not every closed door means God has said no forever; we need Scripture, prayer, the Holy Spirit, and wise counsel to understand what God is doing.

Learning to Discern

Not everything that appears spiritual comes from the Holy Spirit, which means followers of Jesus need to develop biblical discernment. In Acts 16, Paul recognized that the source behind the slave girl’s words was not the Holy Spirit, even though what she said about Paul and his companions was technically accurate. Discernment is not the same as suspicion, judgment, or second-guessing everyone around us; it is learning to recognize what is producing something and where it is leading. As we grow in Scripture, wisdom, maturity, experience, and attention to spiritual fruit, we become better equipped to recognize what is truly from God.

Don't Quench the Spirit

Paul ends this letter with a rapid string of commands: rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, and — right in the middle of it — do not quench the Spirit or despise prophecies, but test everything and hold fast to what is good. You are called to ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you, and ask Him to speak through you, and don't shut Him down out of fear or unfamiliarity. Paul isn't asking for blind acceptance either — test what you hear against Scripture and hold onto what's good. When God speaks to you, it builds your faith. When God speaks through you to someone else, it builds theirs. That's worth staying open for, every single day.

Grounded in the Word

We live in a moment when it is increasingly difficult to know what to trust. AI can fabricate voices and images. News sources spin the same event in opposite directions. Social media profits from outrage and division. In the middle of all of this noise, God has preserved something for us—His Word. The psalmist wrote from his own era of confusion and conflict, yet he found that Scripture was sufficient to light the next step. You do not need to resolve every cultural debate to move forward faithfully. You need a reliable light. The Bible is not a relic of the past; it is the living truth that gives clarity when everything else is competing for your attention.

Resisting the World’s Pattern

The world operates on a clear pattern: put yourself first, follow your heart, do whatever makes you happy. It sounds liberating, but it’s actually enslaving. God offers a radically different path—one that prioritizes His truth over our feelings, service over selfishness, and eternity over the temporary. Resisting the world’s pattern isn’t about becoming isolated or joyless; it’s about discovering that God’s design leads to deeper fulfillment than the world’s cheap imitations ever could. Today, identify one area where you’ve been conforming to cultural expectations rather than God’s truth. Perhaps it’s how you spend money, manage relationships, or define success. Choosing God’s pattern may feel unnatural at first, but it’s the pathway to genuine transformation. The world passes away, but those who do God’s will live forever.

Wrestling with Hard Passages

The Bible doesn't hide humanity's ugliness. Many troubling passages are descriptive, not prescriptive—they show us the consequences of sin, not God's endorsement of evil. Israel's history serves as a warning and instruction for us. When we encounter difficult texts, we must distinguish between what Scripture records and what it celebrates. God allows us to see the chaos that results when

Examining With Purpose

The Bereans didn't blindly accept Paul's teaching—they examined the Scriptures daily to test what they heard. This is biblical deconstruction: careful evaluation with the goal of finding truth, not just tearing down. God invites your honest questions. He's not threatened by your doubts. But examination requires intention. Are you deconstructing to discover what's true, or simply to justify walking away? There's a profound difference. Today, bring your hardest question to God. Write it down. Then commit to genuinely seeking His answer through Scripture, prayer, and trusted community. Don't pull blocks randomly from your faith—examine them carefully, remove what's false, and intentionally replace it with truth that makes you stronger.
