The Courage to Obey

The Courage to Obey

Take 2-3 minutes to quiet yourself and ask God to speak to you today through your devotional time.

Reading: Proverbs 3

Be sure to highlight or note anything that stands out to you while you read.
After reading the passage, take the next 5-10 minutes and spend time reflecting on what you read. You can write these things down in a journal or record them in your phone. Be attentive to both what you highlighted in the passage and what is going on in your life.

Recognizing God’s voice ultimately means very little if we are unwilling to obey what He says. Proverbs calls us to trust the Lord rather than leaning entirely on our own understanding and to acknowledge Him in all our ways. Obedience strengthens our sensitivity to God because we learn through experience that His ways are trustworthy; disobedience, on the other hand, can harden our hearts and make us less responsive to His voice. We do not need to understand everything before we obey—we need to trust the One who is leading us.

What is something you already know God is asking you to do that you have been hesitant or unwilling to obey?

Now, take 10 minutes to seek God in prayer…

  1. Begin your time in prayer by taking 1-3 minutes to sit in silence (You can take longer if you sense the Spirit already beginning to speak to you).
  2. Pray through the things you sensed God speaking to you through the Scriptures or pray the following prayer: Jesus, give us the courage to obey You even when we do not understand everything You are doing. Help us trust Your wisdom more than our own understanding. When You speak, give us the humility to respond, the courage to act, and the faith to trust You with the outcome. Amen.
  3. Close by taking 5 minutes to sit in silence, asking God if there is anything else He wants to speak to you today.

Faith Step:
Take one concrete step of obedience today in an area where you already know what God is asking you to do.
