Take 2-3 minutes to quiet yourself and ask God to speak to you today through your devotional time.
Reading: Romans 8:14-16; 1 John 4:13
Be sure to highlight or note anything that stands out to you while you read.
After reading the passage, take the next 5-10 minutes and spend time reflecting on what you read. You can write these things down in a journal or record them in your phone. Be attentive to both what you highlighted in the passage and what is going on in your life.
One of the most profound works of the Holy Spirit is the internal testimony He gives to the human heart. Romans 8:16 describes the Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we belong to God. This is not merely intellectual agreement with a theological statement. It is a deep, settled assurance that displaces fear and replaces it with the cry of a child calling out to a Father.
Without this experiential witness, faith can feel like little more than wishful thinking. God designed the Holy Spirit to be the living proof within you that His love is real, His promises are certain, and you are truly His.
Where has fear, doubt, or insecurity kept me from resting in the assurance that I belong to God?
Now, take 10 minutes to seek God in prayer…
- Begin your time in prayer by taking 1-3 minutes to sit in silence (You can take longer if you sense the Spirit already beginning to speak to you).
- Pray through the things you sensed God speaking to you through the Scriptures or pray the following prayer: Holy Spirit, bear witness within my heart that I am a beloved child of God. Silence the voices of fear, rejection, and insecurity that cause me to question His love. Give me a deep and settled assurance that I belong to the Father and that nothing can separate me from His presence. Amen.
- Close by taking 5 minutes to sit in silence, asking God if there is anything else He wants to speak to you today.
Faith Steps:
- Identify one fear that has been louder than your faith and bring it honestly before God.
- Speak Romans 8:15-16 aloud and thank God that your identity is rooted in belonging to Him.
