We Become What We Worship

July 7th, 2026by Tree Church Everyday
We Become What We Worship

Take 2-3 minutes to quiet yourself and ask God to speak to you today through your devotional time.

Reading: Psalm 115:1-8

Be sure to highlight or note anything that stands out to you while you read.
After reading the passage, take the next 5-10 minutes and spend time reflecting on what you read. You can write these things down in a journal or record them in your phone. Be attentive to both what you highlighted in the passage and what is going on in your life.

The psalmist reveals a sobering truth: “Those who make them become like them.” When we worship our bank accounts, we become anxious and greedy. When we worship our children’s achievements, we become controlling and disappointed. When we worship our reputation, we become people-pleasers and hollow.

But when we worship the living God—the One who sees, hears, speaks, and acts—we become secure, peaceful, and purposeful. Our worship shapes us from the inside out. The idols of silver and gold are lifeless, created by human hands, but our God is the Creator of all. He does all that He pleases in the heavens. What you bow to will eventually shape who you become.

In what ways am I starting to reflect the things I prioritize above God?

Now, take 10 minutes to seek God in prayer…

  1. Begin your time in prayer by taking 1-3 minutes to sit in silence (You can take longer if you sense the Spirit already beginning to speak to you).
  2. Pray through the things you sensed God speaking to you through the Scriptures or pray the following prayer: Lord, I want my life to reflect Your character rather than the values of this world. Shape my heart as I worship You. Replace fear with trust, pride with humility, and anxiety with peace. Make me more like Jesus as I fix my eyes on You each day. Amen.
  3. Close by taking 5 minutes to sit in silence, asking God if there is anything else He wants to speak to you today.

Faith Steps:

  1. Evaluate what has occupied most of your thoughts this week and ask whether it is drawing you closer to God or away from Him.
  2. Spend time today intentionally worshiping God through prayer, Scripture, or worship music, allowing your focus to shift back to Him.
