Take 2-3 minutes to quiet yourself and ask God to speak to you today through your devotional time.
Reading: Exodus 20:1-6
Be sure to highlight or note anything that stands out to you while you read.
After reading the passage, take the next 5-10 minutes and spend time reflecting on what you read. You can write these things down in a journal or record them in your phone. Be attentive to both what you highlighted in the passage and what is going on in your life.
God didn’t give the first commandment because He’s insecure—He gave it because He loves us. When we place other gods before Him, we’re reaching for things that cannot satisfy. Consider what has crept onto the throne of your heart. Is it your career, your children’s success, financial security, or social approval? These aren’t inherently bad, but when they take God’s place, they become powerless idols.
God delivered Israel from slavery and speaks this command from a mountain ablaze with His glory, yet He knows our tendency to wander. Today, ask yourself: What receives my first thoughts, my best energy, my ultimate trust? The God who delivered you deserves first place.
What “good thing” in my life has slowly become a “god thing” that competes with my worship of the Lord?
Now, take 10 minutes to seek God in prayer…
- Begin your time in prayer by taking 1-3 minutes to sit in silence (You can take longer if you sense the Spirit already beginning to speak to you).
- Pray through the things you sensed God speaking to you through the Scriptures or pray the following prayer: Father, You alone deserve the throne of my heart. Forgive me for allowing good things to become ultimate things. Reveal any idols that have quietly taken Your place, and give me the courage to surrender them to You. Help me trust You above every relationship, achievement, possession, and dream. You alone are worthy of my worship. Amen.
- Close by taking 5 minutes to sit in silence, asking God if there is anything else He wants to speak to you today.
Faith Steps:
- Ask God to reveal one area of your life that has begun competing with Him for first place.
- Make one intentional change today that demonstrates God is your highest priority.
